1. Founded the Head and Neck Oncology Research Program within the Head and Neck Cancer Center
Success: Coordinated and built a collaborative effort in translational laboratory research that brings together
multiple clinical and scientific disciplines. Selected Members: John Sauk, Ph.D., DDS, Professor and Chair, Dept. Oromaxillofacial Pathology and Diagnostic Sciences, Dental School; Robert Ord M.D., DDS, Professor of Oromaxillofacial Surgery, Dental School; David Van Echo, M.D., Professor Dept. Medicine/Oncology; Mohan Suntharalingam, M.D., Dept. Radiation Oncology; James Carney, Ph.D., Dept. Radiation Oncology; William Morgan, Ph.D., Dept. Radiation Oncology; Cedirc Yu, Ph.D., Dept. Radiation Oncology; Joung Rhee, Ph.D., Dept. Radiation Oncology; John Papadimitriou, M.D., Dept. Pathology; Ken Bauer, Ph.D., School of Pharmacy; Daqing Li, MD, Div. Otolaryngology-HNS. Grants: P01 Program Project submitted in revision 2002, "Targeted Molecular Therapy and Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy (IMAT) for HNSCC" 2. Founded Multidisciplinary Head & Neck Cancer Laboratory Success: Created a unique interactive, multidisciplinary research facility for Gene and Molecular research which translates the principle of our Multi-Disciplinary Tumor Board and Clinic to the laboratory setting. A shared laboratory facility was organized in which a selected core of clinicians and scientists from three different schools in the University of Maryland System (Medical School, Dental School, Pharmacy School) come together and work side by side at the bench top on collaborative and unified research projects. Each of the respective departments and their senior researchers have individual projects for which they are taking the lead, but they send a representative scientist or fellow into this shared lab for the day to day experimentation. Overall direction, and data evaluation is done jointly with lab members and technicians that cross these disciplines. This unique laboratory serves as the main hub for the collaborative research that is part of the overall Head and Neck Oncology Research Program. 3. Founded the Center for Voice, Swallowing, and Esophageal Disorders Success: In conjunction with Dr. Paul Castellanos, we envisioned and pioneered the creation of a multidisciplinary clinical center funded by the University of Maryland Medical System that brings together clinicians from the Otolaryngology-HNS, the Div. of GI Medicine, the Div. of General Surgery, and the Div. of Thoracic Surgery for the purpose of diagnosing and treating patients with disorders of the upper aerodigestive tract. The Center opened in July of 2002 and the Otolaryngology-HNS component has brought 351 new outpatient surgical cases to the UMMS in the first quarter (July-September 2002). 4. Founded the Center for Skull Base Surgery Success: Established a multi-disciplinary skull base tumor conference as well as an organized clinical program in conjunction with Dr. Howard Eisenberg, Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery. Incorporated the efforts and collaboration of Interventional Radiology and Radiation Oncology.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
1. Establishing a Multidisciplinary Translational Oral and Head and Neck Cancer Research Program across the School of Medicine and School of Dentistry. (in progress) 2. Establishing a Comprehensive Pre-cancer to Cancer Tissue/Tumor Bank. (in progress) 3. Formalize an Organized and Unified Skull Base Surgical Team in conjunction with the Department of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology. (in progress)
