Chapter 1 – Introduction
PAUL
Hello!
RODNEY
Hi, how are you, nice to meet you! I’m Rodney.
AMY
Hi, I’m Amy.
MIRA
Hello, I’m Mira!
RODNEY
I’m Rodney, nice to meet you! This is exciting we have a lot of dancing to do!
PAUL
I’m leaving.
[Paul, Mira, Rodney and Amy laugh]
PAUL
Voiceover:
I would say that most people know us because of our acting careers,
On camera:
but what people still may not know is that I have type 2 diabetes.
Voiceover:
We want to help people with diabetes understand the importance of a support system, in
addition to their doctor-recommended treatment plan. So Mira and
On camera:
I are going to be each other’s dance partners.
[Background dance noises]
Voiceover:
Staying active may not always be easy but I have found it‘s important to find something
On camera:
you truly enjoy doing, because it makes it easier to keep the commitment.
RODNEY
I’m Rodney Lopez.

AMY
And I am Amy Klewitz.

RODNEY

On camera:
And, I’m really excited about this project because

Voiceover:
I’ve really been encouraged to see how dedicated and committed Paul has been to not
only doing the dance, but to staying active.

MIRA
On camera:
I love dancing and I love dancing with dad and I just thought it would be so much fun
Voiceover:
if we just were able to show people that
On camera:
you can exercise together, but in maybe an unconventional way.
PAUL
The great thing about dancing is that there are so many styles. It, it helps to avoid the
boredom, and keeps things fun while you’re getting exercise.
[Background dance noise]
PAUL
On camera:
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2006, and I know firsthand the challenges trying
to maintain blood sugar control.
Voiceover:
I use Lantus® in the Lantus® SoloSTAR® pen once a day as part of my overall
treatment plan – which also includes a healthy diet, regular physical activity and one oral
diabetes medication. Low blood sugar is a common side effect with insulin, including
Lantus®, and some people may experience symptoms like shaking or sweating.
[On-screen super at Lantus® mention: Prescription Lantus® is a long-acting insulin used
to treat adults with type 2 diabetes and adults and children (6 years and older) with type
1 diabetes for the control of high blood sugar. It should be taken once a day at the same
time each day to lower blood glucose. Do not use to treat diabetic ketoacidosis.]
[Background dance noise]
MIRA
This is like creating a memory with dad.
[Mira laughing in background]
RODNEY
Through the tunnel. You got it, you got it!

PAUL
Voiceover:
Mira and I continue our work
On-camera:
with sanofi-aventis U.S. on Diabetes Co-Stars.
Voiceover:
It’s an awareness campaign for people with diabetes and those who love them.
RODNEY
Rock, step. Rock, step…like so.

MIRA
Voiceover:
Through Diabetes Co-Stars, we’ve been able to communicate with so many people, but
we’re still trying to reach
On-camera:
more of the nearly 26 million Americans who have diabetes and those who support
them.
RODNEY
Dah…boom boom. One, two, three; one, two, three. And slow, to the side.
ANNOUNCER’S VOICE

Chapter 2 - Waltz
RODNEY
So our first dance today is gonna be the waltz.
MIRA
Well you know, dad taught me the box-step when I was little, that’s one dance we did do
together.
RODNEY
So that - So that’s a dance you’re familiar with already? Alright, well that’s great. We
have a lot of work to do, so I hope you’re ready to dance.
PAUL
Ready to go!
MIRA
We’re ready to go!
RODNEY
So one of the things that’s really important before we even start dancing, is to kind of
have a little, a little bit of a warm-up, get the body warmed up a little bit, ah, so that we
can prevent any injury.
This is going to start with–
AMY
The Ginger Rogers moment!
RODNEY
- Mira walking down off the stairs. One, two; one, two.
Well with the waltz, you know you’re going to have to support each other in this dance.
PAUL
Well, we are part of something called Diabetes Co-Stars, where the family supports the
person who’s got the diabetes, in this case me. So we’re going to dance. Dancing is
really easy to do together, I mean once you know it and it’s a fun thing to do.

MIRA
On-camera:
We always loved the Fred and Ginger movies. Fred Astaire was our god when I was a
kid.
Voiceover:
So the waltz especially is gonna be so reminiscent of those memories of watching those
movies together.
PAUL
I worked with my doctor to determine the right overall treatment plan for me which
includes regular physical activity. Using dance as a form of exercise is not only good for
me; it’s great for Mira too. It makes it even better.

RODNEY
And now we’re together, we’re ready for our box-step.
MIRA
Voiceover:
I came up with the idea of us dancing together as a great extension of our
On-camera:
work with sanofi-aventis U.S. and the Diabetes Co-Stars campaign.
PAUL
Voiceover:
What people sometimes don’t realize is that you can also get exercise through activities
like dancing.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
The waltz is a really great dance for exercise, because the waltz has a rise and fall. It’s a
great
On-camera:
toning, ah, dance as well as just a beautiful, ah, music to listen to.
…and now we open up. Bring her in.
[Laughter]
MIRA
It took us about ten minutes to learn each little four count.
RODNEY
Alright, let’s cue the music. One, two, three; two, two, three.
So it’s forward, then back. A little rotation.
MIRA
Then forward again…

RODNEY
Yes…
PAUL
…then coming down the stairs…
RODNEY
Uh huh!
PAUL
Loretta Young, descending!

AMY
…and the big dip…
RODNEY
And the big finish!
MIRA
Yeah.
AMY
Great, that was great…
RODNEY
Beautiful, beautiful…beautiful. Alright, that was a good rehearsal, but now are you ready
to perform?
PAUL
Sir. Yes, that’s - that’s it!
[Laughter]
RODNEY
Let’s do it, let’s go, let’s go perform, let’s get changed and get started.
ANNOUNCER’S VOICE
And now, Mira and Paul Sorvino performing the waltz.
[Waltz Music; Paul and Mira perform]
MIRA
It was so much fun!
PAUL
It was so much fun to do this dance!
MIRA
It was just kind of a beautiful experience.
PAUL
It was.

Chapter 3 - Swing
RODNEY
On camera:
Every actor needs a really great Co-Star

Voiceover:
And so just like your dancing, you need a great partner as well. The Sorvinos have a
really great relationship together; they have a really great chemistry.
On camera:
Alright, we’re going to give you a clue about what your next dance is. Let’s see if you can
recognize it. So here’s our step: triple, triple, rock step; triple, triple and a rock step.
So what do you think you’re going to do now?
PAUL
Looks like you’re dancing the Lindy. What we used to call the Lindy.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Yes, exactly. Lindy and also kind of known as the swing. Let’s do some swing dancing.
PAUL
Okay.
RODNEY
You ready? Here we go…
[Mira laughs]
…Change hands…one, two, three, four.
MIRA
I think we make a pretty good dance team.
PAUL
On camera:
She’s always been one of my biggest supporters – she continues to be my Diabetes Co-
Star
Voiceover:
Which isn’t all that different from being my dance partner in support of my exercise plan!
RODNEY
Voiceover:
And belly turn, and triple.
[Paul laughs]
PAUL
Ah, forgot that, alright!
AMY
Yeah, we’ll go over that…
PAUL
On screen:
My doctor and I decided I should start using Lantus® along with an overall
Voiceover:
treatment plan that includes one oral diabetes medication, diet and physical activities like
dancing. Low blood sugar is common side effect of insulin, including Lantus®. And some
people may experience side effects like shaking or sweating.

RODNEY
Voiceover:
Dah, dah, dah dah dah!
PAUL
I’m confused.
AMY
Voiceover:
And then shimmy around…
RODNEY
On camera:
You just, you just need to rehearse it. That’s really all it is.
Voiceover:
You just kinda gotta rehearse it.
PAUL
On camera:
Swing is something right out of my childhood.
Voiceover:
Very exciting. I think we’re gonna do it great!
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Five, six, seven, eight! Here come those swivels!
On camera:
One, two, three, four, tap, tap, send a rock to the sixth, dah dah dah dah bah!

[Mira laughs]
MIRA
It’s a fun, energetic dance. So it kind of makes you a little happy.
RODNEY
On camera:
So, I think it’s time to perform
Voiceover:
Alright, it’s showtime, it’s showtime, it’s showtime, it’s showtime!
AMY
Voiceover:
You guys will do great!
RODNEY
On camera:
But, they look ready, I think they’re ready!
Voiceover:
Let’s put it on the stage!

PAUL
I thought we were doing that tomorrow.
MIRA
Surprise!
AMY
Voiceover:
Surprise! We’re doing it now!
[Paul laughs]
ANNOUNCER’S VOICE
And now, Mira and Paul Sorvino performing the swing!
[Swing music]
[Clapping]

MIRA
I think we got something cute out of it.
PAUL
Absolutely!
MIRA
I think we had some fun with it!

Chapter 4 – Salsa
RODNEY
Voiceover:
So our next dance is salsa.
PAUL
Bye-bye.
[Paul, Mira, Rodney and Amy laugh]
RODNEY
No, no, come back, come back.
AMY
Don’t go, don’t go.
RODNEY
On camera:
It’s not so bad, it’s not so bad. Now listen, it’s the most complex of the dances we’ve
done so far.
Voiceover:
It’s the hardest but we’re going to take it one step at a time. So why don’t we start with
our first movement.
RODNEY
Yes! There we go.
[Music plays in background]
PAUL
Today’s dance is definitely the most difficult we’ve done so far. But I find that breaking it
down piece by piece makes it much easier.
It’s the same approach I take in following my diabetes treatment plan –step by step,
piece by piece.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Yes!
AMY
Voiceover:
Keep the hand up.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Keep the hand up; keep the right hand up, yes. One thing we can do, is we can also kind
of make this
On camera:
Happen with one hand
MIRA
And where did that just come out of?
RODNEY
It’s a lot of choreography, it’s a lot of choreography and it’s fast.
MIRA
Should we, should we dance with them?
RODNEY
Let’s switch partners, let’s switch partners and, and give it a, give it a shot.
AMY
Just use the finger tips, that’ll help.
RODNEY
Let’s come back to the wrap.
MIRA
And then that’s the [inaudible].
RODNEY
Exactly, yeah
MIRA
He gets the vibe and he can do it…
MIRA
[Laughing] It’s you know, like…
RODNEY
Yes!
MIRA
It’s all about having the spirit of it.
RODNEY
Four, two, three; five, two, three. Swoosh.
AMY
And over your head, I’m just going to turn here, tada.
RODNEY
I’ve really been encouraged to see how dedicated and committed Paul has been, to not
only doing the dance but to staying active.

PAUL

It’s the same as anything that I do, I know. It’s like with singing, acting, dancing, writing…
I, ah, have the same approach to diabetes. Anything that you have to do well, you have
to break down.
RODNEY
You’re going to lean back and kick. Kick.
PAUL
I’ve got to remember to do this so that I’m supporting her.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
So that you can leverage her support there
PAUL
On camera:
So people should speak with their doctor to determine what will work for them.
Voiceover:
My doctor and I decided that taking Lantus® in the Lantus® SoloStar® pen once a day as
part of my overall treatment plan – which also includes a healthy diet, regular physical
activity and one oral diabetes medication – was the right thing for me. Low blood sugar
is a common side effect of insulin, including Lantus®. And some people may experience
symptoms like shaking and sweating.

[Background noise]
MIRA
Voiceover:
It’s also important to
On camera:
Tap into the support of your family and friends
PAUL
On camera:
Hopefully our continued
Voiceover:
Partnership with sanofi-aventis U.S. on the Diabetes Co-Stars campaign will help inspire
people with diabetes and those who love them to take action
RODNEY
Swoosh, and that’s it, boom. Yep, and then you’re done, yeah. Okay.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Four, two, three; five, two, three
On camera:
Here’s the finish! Sorry, Amy.

AMY
There we go, finish!
ANNOUNCER’S VOICE
And now, Mira and Paul Sorvino performing the salsa
[Salsa music]
PAUL
Ya!
[Mira and Paul laughing. Clapping and cheering in the background]

Chapter 5 – Take a Bow

MIRA
On camera:
The part that is living up to my expectations of like creating something really special with
Dad is probably the waltz
Voiceover:
because, ah, we’re almost re-creating the idea of a scene in a sound stage on one of
those great Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers movies.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
3, 1, 2 Bring her in, and 1, 2 box.
PAUL
Voiceover:
Dancing with Mira is
On camera:
really easy because she’s such a talented dancer.
Voiceover:
You could tell that Mira could dance from the time she was a child.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
7 and 8, 6, boom, boom, dada, dada.
PAUL
Voiceover:
Dancing is great exercise - both for people
On camera:
living with diabetes and everybody.

MIRA
On camera:
I’m so glad I took the initiative to educate myself about diabetes in order to support my
dad.
Voiceover:
I’m just happy to be able to help him in whatever way I can.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
Step, reach over.
PAUL
Voiceover:

Continuing our work with sanofi-aventis U.S. through the Diabetes Co-Stars program
has been a great experience for Mira and me.
On camera:
I really think that it’s done me so much good
Voiceover:
physically and it’s been so much fun.

RODNEY
Cross, point out, cross.
RODNEY
Voiceover:
It’s really tough because what, what they’ve been
On camera:
having to do is not only learn choreography but they’ve also had to learn
Voiceover:
different styles and it’s hard enough to learn one style and be proficient at it. But that
they’re, that they’re stabbing it and going through three different styles
On camera:
of dance makes it all the more challenging.
PAUL
Voiceover:
They’re so confident, so such good teachers and such good performers.
On camera:
That’s been a big part of the enjoyment of it.

RODNEY
Voiceover:
One of the things about dancing is it’s certainly physically active, it makes it, it’s a great
exercise and really
On camera:
you can dance at any age and it keeps you
Voiceover:
fresh, it keeps you sharp and so it’s a great mind and body exercise as well.
[On-screen super: Talk to your doctor before starting any exercise regimen]
[Dancing montage. Paul and Mira laughing. Clapping and cheering in the background.]
MIRA
Voiceover:
Seeing my dad thrive the

On camera:
way he has recently means the world to me.
PAUL
Diabetes can be manageable, but it’s a team effort. We hope our message resonates
with those who are living with diabetes as well as those who love them.
