BOARD OF EDUCATION
SCHOOL DISTRICT 41 - BURNABY
A Public Session meeting of the Burnaby Board of Education was held in the Board
Room at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
Present

Trustees Baljinder Narang (Chair), Ron Burton, Meiling Chia, Larry Hayes, Harman Pandher and James Wang; Superintendent of Schools Kevin Kaardal, Secretary-Treasurer Greg Frank, Deputy Superintendents of Schools Gina Niccoli-Moen, Assistant Superintendent Heather Hart and Executive Assistant Sandra Brunner. It was moved by Larry Hayes and seconded by Ron Burton: THAT the agenda be approved, as presented.
Good News

Ron Burton presented Good News items from various Burnaby schools, as attached.
Approval of Minutes

It was moved by Ron Burton and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the minutes of the Public Session of December 11, 2012 be approved, as presented. Board Chair Report

Chair Baljinder Narang advised that the district has had preliminary discussions with all Metro Vancouver school districts regarding the possibility of a common spring break for the 2013/2014 school calendar. The district will begin a public consultation process in February. The district’s school calendar for the 2013/2014 school year will be confirmed by March 31. Ms Narang also reported that the district has initiated a two-year project to revi-talize its technology platform. It was moved by Baljinder Narang and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the Board receive and approve the Board Chair Report, as pre-sented.
Superintendent’s Report

United Nations Student Conference Burnaby Mountain Secondary School Vice-Principal Leanne Kristmanson intro-duced two students who had participated in the United Nations Student Conference on Human Rights in New York City in December, 2012. Aishwi Roshan (Moscrop Secondary) and Sunny Chen (Burnaby North Secondary) shared with Trustees some of the highlights of their trip and what they had learned from their participation in the conference. Other district students had participated via videoconference. Russian Roulette – What are the Chances? Burnaby Mountain Secondary School drama teacher Felicity Rudolph introduced three students who had participated in the creation and production of a docudrama Russian Roulette – What are the Chances? to raise awareness of the dangers of the drug ecstasy. Kieren Gadhia, Allegra Wright and Isaac Caverzan outlined the creation of the play, the rewards they had gained from their participation in the project and in the open “question and answer” session that followed each produc-tion. It was moved by Ron Burton and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the Superintendent’s report be received, as presented. Meiling Chia and James Wang left the meeting at 7:40 p.m. Correspondence

It was moved by Ron Burton and seconded by Harman Pandher: THAT the letter from Assistant Auditor-General of BC Bill Gilhooly regarding the appointment of auditors for government organizations and trust funds be received. It was moved by Ron Burton and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the letter from Ombudsperson Kim Carter regarding files closed from October 1 to December 31, 2012 be received. Meiling Chia and James Wang returned to the meeting at 7:43 p.m.
Committee Reports

It was moved by James Wang and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the Buildings and Grounds Committee Report be received, as presented. Youth and Community Services Committee Report It was moved by Harman Pander and seconded by Larry Hayes: THAT the Youth and Community Services Committee Report be received, as presented.
District Operations – Administrative Services

It was moved by Larry Hayes and seconded by Ron Burton: THAT the Board receive and approve the Superintendent’s District Oper-ations – Administrative Services Report, as presented.
New Business

In accordance with the Board’s Procedural Bylaw, Chair Baljinder Narang presented the Trustee Committee Responsibilities for 2013. It was moved by Larry Hayes and seconded by Ron Burton: THAT the Board approve the Trustee Committee Responsibilities for 2013, as presented. Trustees were informed of the deadlines for the submission of motions to the BCSTA Provincial Council and the BCSTA AGM. It was moved by Larry Hayes and seconded by Ron Burton: THAT the Board receive this information. Harman Pander congratulated Larry Hayes who had received the Queen’s Jubilee medal for his many years of service to sports in the province from MLA Kennedy Stuart’s office. Adjournment
