Reciprocal Recognition Agreement on Professional Qualifications
AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE HONG KONG INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS
AND THE INSTITUTE OF MATERIALS, MINERALS AND MINING FOR
RECIPROCAL RECOGNITION OF PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

By this agreement the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Institute of
Materials, Minerals and Mining (IMMM) continue reciprocal recognition of professional
qualifications required to become a Member of the HKIE in the Geotechnical Discipline and
a Member of the IMMM in Geotechnical Engineering and a Chartered Engineer (which status
must be obtained through professional assessment by the IMMM) and agree that Members of
each organisation will be accorded corresponding membership of the other on receipt of an
acceptable application.

The HKIE and the IMMM have exchanged information on their individual procedures, policies, criteria and requirements for granting the qualification of Member to Geotechnical Engineers and have agreed that these are substantially equivalent. requires the following elements in the formation of a A degree in relevant engineering subjects accredited/recognised by the Institution/Institute. A period of training and responsible experience. Evidence of satisfactory continuing professional development. A professional assessment/review by not less than two Corporate Members of the respective Institution/Institute, at least one of whom is a Geotechnical Engineer. Each Institution/Institute will make its own arrangements for assessment and offer facilities for authorised Members of the other to be present at Interviews or Reviews from time to time. will notify the other and provide copies of any major changes in policy, criteria, procedures and programmes which may affect this Agreement. Each Institution/Institute may continue to differ in its requirements for training, continuing professional development and professional assessment/review, but these will not affect reciprocal recognition of their professional qualifications. The Agreement will be in effect for as long as it is acceptable and desirable to both the HKIE and the IMMM and will be subject to review every five years. Each Institution/Institute will maintain its own fee structure. Each Institute shall retain full discretion as to the admission of any candidates as Members. Applicants who have obtained their substantive training and experience in a jurisdiction shall apply for membership in that jurisdiction first. If such applicants wish to apply for membership in the other jurisdiction first, their submissions under this Agreement shall be subject to a review which may comprise any or all of the following : (a) Submission of a training and experience report. (b) An (c) An essay test. (d) Submission of a record of continuing professional development. Each Institution/Institute has the discretion to determine the extent and scope of the review or in exceptional cases to waive the requirements for an interview and essay test. Each Institution/Institute will notify the other of any applicant to whom such further scrutiny is being applied. Applications from Members of either Institution/Institute under this Agreement shall be assessed on an individual basis. Applicants who are Members of the Institution/Institute in the jurisdiction where they have obtained their substantive training and experience may be required to submit a report on training and experience and record of continuing professional development for review, and to attend an interview. This Agreement applies only to those Members of the HKIE and the IMMM who have been admitted to their respective Institution/Institute via the normal admission procedures and does not apply to members of any other institution or institute who joined either the HKIE or the IMMM via a separate Reciprocal Recognition Agreement. This Agreement will come into effect on ratification by the respective governing bodies of the HKIE and the IMMM.
