Another great surf fest enjoyed by all amongst the gentle waves of sunny Geraldton. 80 participants were treated to nice conditions, friendly competitor rivalry and witnessed some excellent surfing over 2 days by some of the states best longboarders & standup paddle board riders. The BM Surf 9ft open mens was very competitive with Rahn Goddard winning from veteran surfer Ray Barker & Lancelin youngster Hugh Mitchell. Eighteen competitors participated in the Telstra shop 9ft over 55 mens, Much loved, well worn longboards, were being worked by their masters to win a place in the finals. The final result saw evergreen longboarder Gary Tucker in front by a nose, from Mullaloo legends Gary McCormick & George Micallef.
Seniors cards, walking sticks and medicines were left on the beach while six
wily, white haired, surf masters fought for positions in the Dunlop Transport 9ft over 60 mens. The competition was stiff (must have been viagra in the ocean) with Brian Hood falling over the line in front of Sean Rowles from Greg Redfern, Dave Ellis, Ian Morris &Pete Watt. The Coates Hire 9ft Open ladies was all class, the girls surfed with distinction
& in a hard fought final, the eventual winner was Georgia Young from Sam Vanderford & Clare Finucane.
Aussie Pastries sponsored the 8ft over 40’s, the heats attracted a record 24
entries & produced many highlights. Positions in the final were up for grabs with some outstanding finals surfing produced by eventual winner Barry McKinnon holding out from Kevin Anderson & Glen Solomon.
The Sticky Feet Wax 8ft Open was won by Hugh Mitchell with Jarrah Calder
& Kingsley Schilling in the minor placings. Hugh is eligible to surf in the juniors & won this final against some very handy 8ft surfers, well done Hugh.
Cleanpak Total Solutions sponsored the 9ft over 50’s, This event was keenly
contested by six experienced contest animals who would try every trick in the book to get the best waves. Glen Solomon out manoeuvred some very good surfers to win, Barry McKinnon & Ray Barker finished second & third respectively.
The Funs Back Surf 9ft Over 40 mens saw a solid performance from Kevin
Anderson, “Ando” won from competitive surfing mates in Frazer McAlpine & Mick Nolan.
OPR sponsored the SUP heats &final, with increased numbers from last year
the heats produced many challengers for the finals. However, Geraldton SUP surfer Ben Mardon split the pack to win from Crawford Olney, Mike Galvin & Rahn Goddard.
Run Wild Surf &Sports sponsored the Over 35 Ladies, This event was won
by Clare Finucane, from Sam Vanderford &Lucy Prie’s. Congratulations to newcomers Leisl Dunlop, Jan Dunstan & Lisa Mardon ,the ladies performed admirably against some very seasoned contest surfers. Well done ladies.
The Shade Dome Old Mal contest was delight to watch, the longboard relics
of the sixties were on display and were ridden a treat by experienced longboarders. The drop knee turns, trim, noseriding & general old style performance produced some excellent longboarding from years long gone. Rahn Goddard was in sensational form to win from youngster Alex Kirk & oldtimer Garry McCormick. With the contest complete nice waves & free surfs were the on offer during Sunday afternoon. The presentation of trophies held at the Winter Sun hotel provided many laughs over a few ales & the pub meal of steak or chicken. Chic supplied ice cream for sweets. However, Bruce Montgomery was not a happy chappy as his favourite pavlova was not on the menu this year.

The BM Surf 9.1 Longboard raffle was won by Deidre Goddard. Husband
Terry & young Rahn were green with envy. The first competitors prize was a BM Bullet, supplied by John Gouley at the Telstra Shop Geraldton. It was won by Peter Dunn, this man has won more surfboards than anyone I know. Great stuff Dunny, well done. New sponsors Oakajee Port & Rail sponsored the second competitors prize. The NSP Stand Up Paddle Board was won by Albany surfer Kim Johnson. Kim and long time mate Daryl Baillie were last seen carrying the board up Chapman rd after the Pressos. Thanks to head judge Ray Barker &his assistant Dave Flower for their support, Kingsley Schilling as contest director, Pete Watt as tallier & all the volunteers who helped judge the competition.
